Ding Dong, Clean Coal Is Dead (For Now)

Ding Dong, Clean Coal Is Dead (For Now)

Weren't the folks at the Department of Energy listening to the President's final State of Union address?

To build a future of energy security, we must trust in the creative genius of American researchers and entrepreneurs and empower them to pioneer a new generation of clean energy technology.

Apparently not. DOE just announced it's canceling funding from FutureGen -- the one and only "clean coal" project going that was supposed to show the world how to build and run a coal-fired power plant with near zero emissions. The $1.8 billion project -- plagued by mounting costs and an ever-receding horizon for completion -- may now be dead, according to breaking news from the Associated Press (hat tip, David Roberts).

Looks like we don't need technology to deliver clean coal after all, because the cleanest coal of all is no coal at all. Eureka!
