A piece in the NYTimes about the effect of declining water levels in the Great Lakes brings home what little we know about how global warming is already changing our lives. For every inch of depth the lakes lose, cargo ships in aggregate must lighten their load by 270 tons. That's 540,000 pounds of stuff that needs to wait for the next ride. Lake Ontario is down 7 inches over the last year alone.
