Alert: New Orleans Evacuating

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- New Orleans ordered residents to evacuate the city as Hurricane Gustav was forecast to strike the U.S. Gulf Coast harder than Katrina did three years ago.....
"Tonight you need to be scared; you need to get your butts out of New Orleans now,'' Mayor Ray Nagin said at a press conference late yesterday. "This is the mother of all storms. I am not sure we have seen anything like it.''
- Outbound traffic clogged highways east and west of New Orleans,
- Convoys of school buses and ambulances rolled into town and the state made highways one-way leaving the area at 4 a.m.
- Oil companies are evacuating workers and shutting offshore platforms and refineries along the coast.
- Energy producers have idled 77 percent of natural-gas production and 37 percent of oil output in the Gulf.
- The Republican National Convention may be postponed.
The McCain campaign is carefully managing the potential political fallout of a decidedly Democratic turn of events, right after announcing the appointment of climate skeptic Sarah Palin as the Republican Vice Presidential nominee.
