Abu Dhabi Vows World's Toughest Green Building Standards

Oil-drenched Abu Dhabi has been sinking billions into colossal clean energy projects. And now it's promising to enact the world's toughest green building standards.
The measures, called the Estidama Program (Arabic for "sustainability"), are still in development -- part of Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, the long-term green scheme for the UAE capital.
Here are some key parts of the pending law, via Arabian Business:
Every building in the emirate will have to adhere to the new green standard. Sanctions will be imposed on developers who shirk the law, while Abu Dhabi's Urban Planning Council will retain the right to refuse building permits to any plan that falls short.
The regs will be firmly in place in five years. Owners of existing buildings will be forced to apply them, eventually. Not unlike US green building standards, a point system will be used. The greenest buildings will earn five "pearls."
First there was Abu Dhabi's almost mythical Masdar City. It's now on track to be the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste, car-free city, powered almost exclusively by the sun and the wind.
In May, Masdar announced that it's investing $2 billion to manufacture thin-film solar cells. Its goal? To be a world leader in solar power. And now, green buildings.
Begs the question: what other clean energy aces does the richest city in the world have up its sleeve?

Abu Dhabi is on the right track
I think what they are doing should be standard procedure in todays future planning of cities and villages. We need to put a lot more effort into greening the planet and help to sustain our future.
While the politicians in the west keep arguing over the price of oil, places like the UAE quietly build a sustainable future for their kids.
