Intel, HP To US Gov't: Green Your IT, Save $1 Billion on Energy

Intel and Hewlett-Packard have sent a big green message to the federal government about its PCs and data centers: make them green and save taxpayers more than $1 billion in energy costs over five years.

The companies just released two studies – one on data centers and the other on PCs – and found that if the feds green the two, they’ll save taxpayers a bundle -- and cut oil consumption by 1.3 billion barrels. (Note: The full studies require registration to view from "government customers only.")

Quantified differently, the savings would pay for the Social Security benefits of about 30,000 Americans for a year, or provide nearly one billion meals for the hungry. Whichever way you slice it, it's a win-win.

On greening federal data centers, from Information Week:

HP and Intel estimate that it currently costs nearly $480 million annually to power federal data centers. Federal data centers currently consume about 1.1 billion kWh of energy per year, says the [Go Green Power Play] study. With "greener" data centers, over five years the savings of 9.5 billion kilowatt hours (kWhs) in energy consumption would be equivalent to removing 1.4 million cars from the road.

On greening Washington's PCs:

The second report, Go Green PC Power, estimates the U.S. federal government can potentially save another $82.4 million annually -- or nearly $330 million over four years -- by using more energy efficient PCs, specifically those that meet the Environmental Protection Agency's more stringent Energy Star standards that went into effect last July.

In case you’re wondering, it really is that simple.
